The Italian musician Domenico Orlando is recognized as one of the most important oboists of his generation, capable of combining the refinement of the Italian and French schools with the prestige of an international orchestral career at the highest level.
Born in Salerno in 1979, he graduated at just seventeen with top honours from the Conservatory of Music “Giuseppe Martucci” in Salerno, under the guidance of M° Alfonso Smaldone. He subsequently refined his training with Luca Vignali in Rome and Maurice Bourgue in Geneva, obtaining the Diplôme de Soliste avec distinction.
Winner of major international competitions, in 1997 he was awarded the Second Prize (First not awarded) and the Jury Special Prize at the “G. Tomassini” Competition. He later won Third Prize at the 7th Tokyo International Oboe Competition, one of the most prestigious oboe competitions in the world.
In 2001, at only twenty-two years of age, he won the position of Principal Oboe at the Teatro Regio di Torino. From 2009 to 2024 he served as Principal Oboe of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, performing in the most important international concert halls and taking part in major tours. He also held the position of Principal Oboe with the Sinfonieorchester St. Gallen and collaborated with the Bayerischer Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Lorin Maazel. As a guest, he is regularly invited to perform with the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Mito Chamber Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, the Bamberger Symphoniker, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.
Throughout his career he has collaborated with some of the world’s greatest conductors, including Blomstedt, Noseda, Nelsons, Chailly, Mäkelä, Hrůša, Gergiev, Barenboim, Meir Wellber, Bychkov, Maazel, Fruhbeck de Burgos, Rostropovich, Ashkenazy, Myung-Whun Chung, Pappano, Harding, Nagano, Accardo, Ticciati, Dudamel, Gatti, Norrington and others, performing at internationally renowned festivals and venues such as the Salzburg Festival, the Lucerne Festival and the BBC Proms. His performances have been broadcast and recorded by ARTE, EURO ARTS CHANNEL, MDR and RTS, and streamed on Medici.tv. His discography includes recordings released by EMI, Decca Records and Deutsche Grammophon.
A versatile and engaging soloist, his repertoire spans all the principal musical periods and styles — from Baroque and Classical concertos to Romantic and contemporary works — in addition to an extensive chamber music repertoire.
He has appeared as a soloist with major orchestras including the Gewandhausorchester, the Teatro Regio di Torino and the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt and Gianandrea Noseda, collaborating with the violinist Vilde Frang.
Deeply committed to artistic education, Domenico Orlando is also an internationally renowned pedagogue. He has been a professor at the Kunstuniversität Graz since 2019 and at the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg since 2021. He regularly gives masterclasses in Italy, Great Britain, Spain, Japan and China. In Italy he has led intensive oboe masterclasses at institutions and festivals such as the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, the Nuova Orchestra Scarlatti in Naples and specialised summer academies for advanced wind players. His teaching activity includes solo repertoire, orchestral excerpts and audition preparation, reed technique, stylistic interpretation and chamber music coaching. Internationally, he is frequently invited to work with young professionals, conservatory students and chamber ensembles on advanced repertoire.
Since 2008 he has been an official Marigaux artist and performs on a Marigaux M2 oboe, renowned for the depth and elegance of its tone as well as its exceptional sound projection.
Domenico Orlando continues to inspire audiences and new generations of musicians worldwide through his expressive tone and interpretative depth.
